I drove my car on a 3 hour trip this weekend and most of the drive was in HEAVY rain. The morning after, I opened my trunk and one of my rags that was sitting in the left corner by the tail light was soaked. I looked in the spare tire area and there was a 1" deep puddle of water! I pulled the lining apart and saw a vent of some sort that I never noticed before. I'm assuming that this is to vent the trunk but why was water leaking in? It's never leaked before. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, how did you remedy it? I'd like to take the vent out and plug the big hole but I'm not sure if it serves an important function.

That vent is supposed to only open when you close the door. Its sole purpose is to vent out the cabin air pressure when closing the door abruptly.

I see... Thanks for the info, Zip. Now that I know this I think I'll plug up the hole so my car doesn't become a rust bucket like my prelude. I always leave the sunroof cracked open. That should be enough of a vent to vent the cabin.

if you take out the lights, there is a weather strip seal or whatever in there..that needs to be replaced.

Random: You're right... I had trunk water but when I simply removed and checked the seals, the water problem went away.

Thanks guys, I'll check that. I immediately thought that the vent was the culprit since it was wet in the immediate area around it.

Yeah, I used to have a '91 Civic EX sedan that had the same problem. Mass water in the trunk and the tail lights would fill up with water. I ended up drilling a small drain hole in each tail light and replacing the sponge-like gaskets. Talk about a shitty engineering design. You'd think that it never rains in Japan smile
